The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to introduce laws governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, including Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders argue the rules are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader ongoing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and European institutions.
