Early Saturday morning, accounts surfaced of significant explosions rocking the Iranian capital, following statements from Israeli officials that it had carried out a preemptive military action.
Powerful Explosions and Smoke Reported in the Heart of Tehran
As per on-the-ground reports, two loud blasts were audible in Tehran on Saturday morning. Simultaneously, two plumes of thick smoke were observed rising over the centre and east of the city.
“The type of explosions suggests that this is a strike involving missiles,” a media outlet reported, though it did not initially offer further details.
Context: Rising Tensions and Prior Developments
The incident occurs against a backdrop of sharply increased strains in the Middle East. Major events leading up to this strike involve:
- US Military Buildup: A massive build-up of US naval forces in the region, including the repositioning of aircraft carriers.
- Diplomatic Negotiations: Latest discussions between the US and Iran on Tehran's atomic program ended inconclusively, with suggestions of further talks scheduled.
- Official Rhetoric: Prior to the attack, a prominent American figure had labeled Iran as “the leading state sponsor of terrorism” and delivered threats regarding its weapons development.
- Ultimatum: Allegedly, a deadline of 10 to 15 days had been presented to Iran to resolve the nuclear dispute or face severe consequences.
Iranian Response
In response to prior accusations, Iranian officials had accused the United States of spreading “big lies” about its missiles programme. They dismissed assertions about weapons development and casualty figures as baseless.
These developments is fast-moving, with additional reports anticipated as the situation develops.
