Jair Bolsonaro has been detained after authorities concluded he posed a concrete flight risk while under home confinement.
The one-time leader was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in last fall and given more than over two decades in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.
Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the action to imprison the septuagenarian politician was a preventative measure after "new facts" emerged.
This encompassed trying to remove his electronic bracelet and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".
Judicial Records Show Escape Risks
In a paperwork permitting the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his child.
His child, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a assembly of his followers near Bolsonaro's home to take place on Saturday evening.
The senator wrote on digital networks on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I call on you to fight with us."
He said the gathering would be so backers could offer prayers for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the possibility of Bolsonaro's "relocation to diplomatic missions near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing underscores that the United States embassy in the national capital, the capital city, is located around 13km from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
His judicial problems have provoked anger from fellow right-wing populist American leader Trump, leading him to implement a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being detained in a Federal Police station in the capital and will undergo a detention review on the following day.
Latest Court Petitions
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to complete his entire prison term under home confinement, with digital surveillance.
They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be allowed to depart his residence for medical treatment, saying he needed regular treatment for lung conditions and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was found guilty of heading a scheme aimed at maintaining his control after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, Lula.
Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plan which involved plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing Bolsonaro's trial.
The conspiracy was stopped because it failed to get the backing of the army and air force commanders. The current president was inaugurated without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a seven days after, on the eighth of January, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.
The security forces stepped in and around fifteen hundred individuals were taken into custody.
The justices found that the rioters had been encouraged by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
At the moment, the legal team called the over 27-year sentence extremely harsh.
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until 2060 - a decade minus two years after the end of his sentence.
The one-time head of state called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him competing in the 2026 presidential election.
