The Iconic Puzzle Game Wouldn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Might Solve This

Each time a major prize-giving event nears, one notices a clamor for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the passions of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

My colleague has already made for a horror game category. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Leading game ceremonies currently feature award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Together, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges of one title, intense tile-matching in a different title, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles from additional release. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • A different innovative game was excluded in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, however the design in brain-teasers holds tremendous importance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as the most-played games globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for top gaming experience. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, while interacting with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have this problem. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.

Restating the point, these represent titles that otherwise have no home in important events. Logic title developers are working at the challenging frontier of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Similar to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
