Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay Technology This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing video review technology.

Replay systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to contest particular decisions from the official, echoing the protocol already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships this year involves the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
